An introduction to elastic quotas file system
Elastic quota is a disk management technique. With the help of this data management technique one can easily handle large databases. A database typically contains some informative data. This data has its own unique structural record architecture. It has systematic tables which contain logical and physical composition of data, a configuration file which has different values associated with the database. Adding to this system files there is also a recovery log which tracks and records ongoing transactions which can be later get compressed to save transmission bandwidth and disk space. In short a good database must possess the processing requirement of the system.
Using elastic quotas the computer disk space becomes elastic and flexible like main memory and the central processing unit. It can handle many large databases to process information simultaneously. Elastic quotas permit computer users to use an endless amount of vacant disk space. The system administrator has the capability to control the amount of disk space allocated to different computer programs or users. Elastic quotas preserve existing constant file semantics. The user can delete the data if required. The elastic quota system has been successfully implemented in Solaris. Researchers have measured its performance. Elastic quotas are easy to implement. They provide an efficient, low operating cost solution for elastic file management.
