Braingate technology seminar report, abstract

An introduction to Braingate technology
Human beings suffer from different diseases arising of their peculiar lifestyle. Several diseases are related to brain for example chronic depression. Brain pacemakers are usually used to diagnose and cure the symptoms of brain related diseases such as epilepsy and depression. The possible treatment for these diseases is by using neural implant techniques like deep brain stimulation and nerve stimulation. This technique is a boon for patients with diseases which were earlier considered as incurable. Brain gate technology is a brain implant system currently under research and development which is intended to help the patients who have problems with their limbs and patients with accidental spinal cord injury.

Brain gate technology is also widely used to treat depression. This technique utilizes a sensor which is implanted into the brain. The sensor records brain activity in the patient and converts the desire of the patient into computer instructions. Brain gate technology consists of a sensor fixed in the brain along with an external decoder which can connect to some external interface. The sensor utilizes electrodes which can detect the electromagnetic signature transmitted from neurons present in the brain. Afterwards the sensor converts that activity into electrically charged signals. These signals are then passed to an external appliance which is decoded using programming software.

BrainGate is a brain implant system developed by the bio-tech company Cyberkinetics in 2003 in conjunction with the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University. The device was designed to help those who have lost control of their limbs, or other bodily functions, such as patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or spinal cord injury. The computer chip, which is implanted into the brain, monitors brain activity in the patient and converts the intention of the user into computer commands. Cyberkinetics describes that ""such applications may include novel communications interfaces for motor impaired patients, as well as the monitoring and treatment of certain diseases which manifest themselves in patterns of brain activity, such as epilepsy and depression."
