Should we rethink how we define intelligence? πŸ“š 2-Minute Speech

Today I want to ask a simple yet powerful question β€” should we rethink how we define intelligence?

For far too long, intelligence has been measured by exam scores, degrees, and how quickly one can solve mathematical problems. But is that truly the full picture? In a country as diverse and vibrant as India, intelligence takes many forms. A farmer who knows when to sow his seeds by observing the sky, a craftsperson who creates beauty with their hands, a mother who balances a household on a tight budget β€” are these people not intelligent in their own right?

Our traditional system tends to reward only one kind of intellect β€” the academic one. But intelligence can be emotional, social, creative, practical and even spiritual. Some children may not excel in textbooks but shine when they are given a stage, a canvas or even a garden. Should we not value their gifts equally?

We must stop seeing intelligence as a one-size-fits-all label. Instead, we should embrace a broader, more inclusive view that celebrates diverse strengths and talents. It is time we move from ranking individuals to recognising their unique potential.

Let us start building a society where intelligence is not just about how much you know, but how you think, feel, and contribute to the world around you.
