Causes prevention and repair of cracks in building. A Seminar abstract, report

Dealing With Cracks
Buildings have a unique place in the area of construction engineering. Buildings are made to last for decades. Not only because it shares emotional bonds with its residents. Other reasons being the construction costs and time taken. Time takes a toll on everything, or in other words time is defined that way. With the passing of time, the slow reactions which were continuously working inside the cement, start showing their effect in the form of cracks. Climatic conditions and the environmental stress also play their part in the development of the cracks in buildings. Wrong methods of construction and use of bad quality of materials are equally responsible for deteriorating the health of a building.

Cracks can also appear in a building due to shrinkage. Use of excessive water or cement can cause shrinkage. So avoid the excess of any of these components while preparing mortar. Once the hardening of cement takes place, moisture level drops and causes shrinkage. In such a case, start proper curing as soon as the initial setting has taken place, and continue the curing for at least 7-10 days. Movement of the foundation and settlement of soil can also lead to cracks in the building. Sometimes the clayey soil near the foundation may absorb water and expand to develop cracks in the building. Remedy for the above two problems is keeping the foundations deep and providing plinth protection. Once formed, the damage can be reduced by filling them with epoxy adhesives.
