An Introduction to Vacuum Braking System
The vacuum braking system is utilized in modern coaches of rail wagon and metro railways. In olden days, i.e. some decades back when the braking mechanism was not so technology driven then manually applied brakes were utilized to stop the train. Afterwards some the railway engines and locomotives started using steam breaks. Though these steam breaks were more powerful that the normal breaks but still the braking effort was not so satisfactory. Some engineers also came up with a chain mechanism. This system required a chain to get coupled to the train. But it was almost impossible to apply equal breaking effort to all the wagons connected to each other.

If the braking effort was too high it sometimes led to locomotive imbalance. A major technological advancement was achieved by the engineers couple of years back with the introduction of the vacuum braking system. In this technique flexible pipes were utilized. These pipes got connected between all the coaches and engines of the train. A complete vacuum was created with the help of a valve present on the engine and wagons. This vacuum activated the break pistons connected to all the wagons. The great advantage with this technology is that the braking effort can be increased or decreased by the driver.
