Limited internet access to super fast Broadband for rural areas in India
The Indian government plans to launch a broadband policy that would establish broadband connectivity as a basic fundamental right like education and health. The strategy is expected to be released within 100 days, according to government documents seen by The Economic Times. The policy will include ways to provide affordable broadband access in rural and remote areas through a combination of optic fibre, wireless and VSAT technologies. It will also encourage FTTH rollouts and back them with enabling guidelines to create an always connected society.
The broadband initiative follows concerns from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that the delayed rollout of the national optic fibre network (NOFN) could ruin the government's pan-India broadband penetration targets of 175 million and 600 million users by 2017 and 2020, respectively, laid out in the National Telecom Policy 2012.
According to the same documents, the Indian government also plans to establish an appropriate institutional framework to coordinate with various departments and agencies for deployment and maintenance of telecom cables, including fiber-optic cables, for rapid expansion of broadband connectivity across the country.
