Green Computing

Green Computing Seminar report

Green computing simply means eco friendly use of computers and related resources.Alternative of green computing term is green IT that refers to environmentally sustainable computing. The US Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 launched Energy Star,a voluntary labeling program. It promote and recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and other technologies which resulted in sleep mode adoption among consumer electronics. Green computing involves many activities such as implementation of energy-efficient general processing units CPU's, servers and peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption and proper disposal of electronic wastes. The Energy Star label became common especially in notebook computers and displays.Other programs related to this type of computing are recently developed in Europe and Asia.

In the article Harnessing Green IT: Principles and Practices, San Murugesan defines the field of green computing as the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and  networking and communications systems efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment. The goals of green computing and green chemistry are same. Both are used to reduce the hazardous material usage, maximize energy efficiency during the products lifetime and promote the re cyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste. Mainly green computing techniques helpful in reducing the environmental impacts of IT operations. It is all about the usage of computers in a smarter and efficient manner.

For a well mentioned green computing the regulations implemented by government merely be a part not fully serve. To minimize adverse impact on the global environment, the work habits of computer users and businesses needs to be modified. Some steps are: Power-down the CPU and all peripherals during extended periods of inactivity; try to do computer-related tasks during contiguous, intensive blocks of time, leaving hardware off at other times ; power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals such as laser printers according to need; use liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors rather than cathode-ray-tube CRT monitors;use notebook computers rather than desktop computers whenever possible; use the power-management features to turn off hard drives and displays after several minutes of inactivity; minimize the use of paper and properly recycle waste paper;dispose of e-waste according to federal, state and local regulations;employ alternative energy sources for computing workstations, servers, networks and data centers.

Green technology focuses on reducing the environmental impact of industrial processes and innovative technologies caused by the Earths growing population. It does not damage or deplete natural resources. This computing creates fully recyclable products, reduce pollution, proposing alternative technologies in various fields, and creating a center of economic activity around technologies that will benefit the environment.

The green technology field encompass a broad range of subjects from new energy-generation techniques to the study of advanced materials to be used in our daily life. It promises the usage of alternative energy sources such as sun, wind, water and sugar. Scientists tried in testing building materials and studying chemical processes to reduce the use and generation of hazardous substances.Scientists are hoping that with the help of nanotechnology green computing can transform manufacturing on a global level from government purchasing to a technological revolution. Companies are addressing e-waste by offering take-back recycling programs and other solutions, with lower energy consumption and less wasted hardware.Test and apply alternate non hazardous materials in the products manufacturing process.

For example, a Taiwanese company VIA Technologies manufactures motherboard chip sets, CPU's, and other computer hardware, introduced its initiative for green computing in 2001. The company has been focusing on power efficiency throughout the design and manufacturing process of its products. It is environment friendly and products are manufactured using a range of clean-computing strategies. The company is striving to educate markets on the benefits of green computing for the sake of the environment as well as productivity and overall user experience.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development concentrate on an actual implementation to tackle global warming and environmental degradation. An effort to reduce the electric power consumption of PCs in active and inactive states is Climate Savers Computing Initiative. It provides a catalog of green products from its member organizations, and information for reducing PC power consumption.

The Green Electronics Council offers the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool to assist in the purchase of greener computing systems. The Green Grid is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems. Green Comm Challenge is an organization that promotes the development of energy conservation technology and practices in the field of Information and Communications Technology. The Transaction Processing Performance Council ( TPC) Energy specification augments the existing TPC benchmarks by allowing for optional publications of energy metrics alongside their performance results. The SPEC Power is the first industry standard benchmark that measures power consumption in relation to performance for server-class computers.

The old computers recycling raises an important issue. The old storage devices still hold private information, such as emails, passwords, and credit card numbers, which can be recovered simply by someone's using software available freely on the Internet. Deletion of a file does not actually remove the file from the hard drive. Before recycling a computer, users should remove the hard drive, or hard drives if there is more than one, and physically destroy it or store it somewhere safe. There are some authorized hardware recycling companies to whom the computer may be given for recycling, and they typically sign a non disclosure agreement.

Many certification programs are available to demonstrate that an individual has specific green computing knowledge.Certifications include Green computing Initiative, CompTIA,Information Systems Examination Board,Singapore Info comm Technology Federation and Australian Computer Society. All these contribute a great effort in green computing to educate students how to build and maintain systems while reducing its negative impact on the environment.
