Solution: After spending many hours on research and experimenting, I found the solution is to format the SD card.
# Unmount the SD card
# Switch off the phone
# Remove the sdcard from phone and connect to your computer/laptop
# Backup the SD card data to your computer
# Run a virus scan on the backed up data, remove virus if any
# Format the sdcard
# Restore data back to SD card
# Insert the card back to phone
# Switch on your android phone.
