DSP based motor control. Seminar abstract, report

An Introduction to DSP Controllers For Motors
Digital Signal Processing(DSP) branches out from the field of signal processing. Fundamentally, Digital signal processing is an act of mathematically manipulating the information contained in the signal in an attempt to modify or improve it. The goal is usually to filter, measure and if needed compress continuous real world analog signals. It usually starts with converting the analog signal into digital data by sampling and digitizing with the help of analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Now, mathematical operations can be performed on the stream of numbers obtained from the signal after digitizing. If the output required is an analog signal, digital-to-analog converter (DAC) can be put to work.

Controllers are primarily put to use in motors, to obtain variable speed and torque. They may also be used to control speed and torque to save power and increase efficiency. Digital signal processors have some advantages over conventional micro-controllers. They can perform digital processing faster than micro-controllers. As mentioned before, DSP controller will have built in Digital to analog converter, counter and pulse generator. In a micro-controller, one needs to install them externally, Increasing costs and inconvenience. What sets a DSP apart was its optimization for arithmetic operations, especially multiplication, although these days it's common for micro controllers to come along with multiplication and division instructions.
