An Introduction to Common Synthetic Plastics
Plastics are basically compounds with long chains of repeating units. The atoms which make up the repeating atoms determine the properties of the compound. If these polymers are made tougher by the use of heat, then they are known as plastics. There are many types of plastics which have a wide range of use in day-to-day life. Plastic is used to make many things in industries and factories. Plastics greatly differ in their strength and other properties. Polyethylene and nylon are some of the well known plastics. Plastics can be mainly classified as thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers. Man-made plastics are used in an array of applications like films, tubes and many more. There are various materials used in the production of plastics like polyamide, polyimide and polycarbonate.

Some common synthetic plastics are Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polystyrene and Polyethylene. Polyvinyl chloride is obtained after heating vinyl chloride in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and water. This reaction is performed under pressure. It is odorless and chemically inert. This makes it useful in making many products. As the name suggests, it is recurring vinyl molecule. Polyethylene is available in two forms: low density and high density. It is sometimes known as polythene. It is flexible and durable in nature. These and many other synthetic plastics are used on a large scale in production industries.
