Aerogel, an introduction
The gel is used to get aerogel. It is very light and porous. Here the gas is used in place of the liquid part of the gel. A solid structure gets formed when you replace it with gas. The density and thermal conductivity are very low. It has various nicknames such as solid smoke, frozen smoke, and many more. One of the characteristics is that, when the light travels through the material, it gets scattered. Aerogel was first obtained in the year 1931 by Samuel Stephen Kistler. He had a bet with his friend Charles Learned. He had to replace the liquid preset in the jellies with gas. The liquid present in the gel is extracted using the process of super critical drying.

Slowly and slowly the liquid gets dried off. This process is adopted to avoid collapse of the solid matrix from capillary action. Silica gels were first used to produce aerogels. Aerogels can also be made from alumina, tin dioxide and chromia. The first aerogel was made from carbon as developed in the late 1980s. Aerogels have various applications. It can be used as a catalyst. It is used in paints and cosmetics as thickening agents. It is used as an absorbent to clean up spills.
