Advancements In Pavement Designs. Seminar abstract, report

A seminar on Advancements In Pavement Designs

The engineering techniques required to design and develop pavements come under the branch of Pavement engineering. Coming to pavement design, a noteworthy point be mentioned here - the design of the pavement may affect the looks of the pavement, but never vice-verse. Designing a pavement also takes into account the feasibility of the construction by framing the time and costs into account. Besides the conventional factors like soils, hydraulics, and material properties. Pavement designs of flexible and rigid types require different engineering techniques for their construction. Several layers of materials come together to form a typical flexible pavement. The intensity of stress is the maximum for the topmost layer; hence best quality materials should be used here.

Rigid pavement designs usually consist of a concrete surface course of hydraulic cement and underlying base and an optional sub base. Here, Too the top most surface provides the maximum strength. The observed rigidity is due to the high elasticity of the cement materials. An array of pavement designs has come into existence due to the advancements in pavement engineering. Some of the advanced pavement designs are as listed below:

Perpetual Pavement Design: Used for long life structural design of more than 30 years.

CRCP - Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement Design

CPCD - Concrete Pavement Contraction Design

JRCP - Jointed Reinforced Concrete Pavement

Post-Tensioned Concrete Pavements - This design is currently in an experimental stage and based on engineering experience and judgment

Composite Pavement - Composed of both asphalt HMA and hydraulic cement concrete
